Wild Cherry Bark
Traditional therapeutic use of the bark of the Wild Cherry tree has been dependent upon the variety and location. This particular species, P. serotina has mostly been used as a way to stop an irritating coughing reflex, for instance in whooping cough or bronchitis. It can be combined with other carefully chosen, appropriate medicines that help to treat the underlying reason for the cough, for a more thorough effect.
As traditional practitioners used this plant, they began to more clearly define other benefits. They found that it had a sedating effect on the nervous system and blood pressure, but encouraged an appetite, which assisted when treating people who were weak with illness, but stimulated strengthening and recovery through consumption of nourishment. Wild cherry bark was also found to alleviate eye inflammation.
