In Chinese medicine, this plant is seen as having a bitter and cold nature, suited to treat kidney and bladder channels, indicating perhaps that it was aimed at treating infections in the lower abdomen, clearing heat and drying dampness. Its berberine content is used to eliminate many types of infections, including those accompanied by fevers and sweating, gynecological infections, eye infections, and associated symptoms.

Huang bai is used for other applications relative to a Chinese diagnosis of  jaundice, swelling, and redness in lower limbs and feet.

Studies have identified the antibiotic strength of berberine for fighting infections. There is also evidence of effectiveness against specific pathogens including meningitis, bacillary dysentery, leptospirosis.
