Hawthorn Leaf and Flower

Crataegus laevigata

Both the leaf and flower of Hawthorne is used to make medicines that mostly benefit the heart. Diseases of the blood vessels, congestive heart failure, chest pain and irregular heartbeat all benefit from the use of Hawthorne. It is used to treat both low and high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and to equalize good and bad cholestrol.

A lesser known use of Hawthorne, it can relieve digestive problems, including indigestion, diarrhea and stomache ache. Some people respond to Hawthorne as a countering agent to anxiety, especially when connected to pre-menstrual syndrome.

Topically, Hawthorne can be used to treat boils, sores and ulcers, itching and frostbite.

In the kitchen, you will find this herb in candied fruit, jam, jelly, and wine.
