St. John’s Wort (Organic)

Hypericum perforatum

There is early documentation of St. John's Wort's medicinal use from the first century by Greek physicians Galen and Dioscorides. They used it for diuretic effect, wound healing and to treat menstrual related problems. This historical recording of usage speaks to the long recognized value of this plant. Originally native to Europe, St. John’s wort has since become prevalent on 7 continents.

The theme of medicinal application with this plant is largely related to the nervous system. In modern times it is often associated with *relief of depressive conditions. Chinese medicine identified applications beyond the earliest (and more recent) uses elsewhere, in that it was also used to address bronchitis, stimulate the lungs, address incontinence, stop or slow excessive bleeding, fight infections, reduce urinary tract infection pain, stop diarrhea and address lactation related complications. It can be extracted into oil for topical pain relief.

In recent times, since high profile exposure in the U.S. in the late 1990’s, it has been well studied. Results have been mixed with criticism aimed at the methods of research, and lack of follow through of  some research samples, as adding to the confusion. Nevertheless, significant numbers of studies acknowledge the potential value (mostly studied as comparison to pharmaceutical antidepressants) and many have confirmed that in cases of low to mild depression, St John’s wort appears to work just as well as pharmaceutical antidepressants, for shorter term conditions, and without any of the side effects of the pharmaceutical options. Many studies also encourage further research in conclusion.
