The seeds of the milk thistle have been used for thousands of years in European medicine, with documentation from Pliny the Elder in ancient Rome, Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century, and upward throughout European history. The most frequently noted historic uses were as a restorative for problems of the liver, spleen, and the vascular system.

The seed is rich in antioxidants, with protective and regenerative effects. It has been found to be safe for use in pregnancy and during lactation. And, it is currently being studied for its protective effect on neurological propensities such as Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. A mainly protective herbs, it also supports of kidney function and the heart, and is helpful in *resolving digestive problems, and osteoporosis.

Milk thistle seed may be helpful in cases of alcoholic or viral hepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis, mushroom poisoning, and cancer. Early laboratory studies suggest that milk thistle may have anti-cancer effects. Some studies suggest silymarin, a flavonoid component of milk thistle, may favorably supplement sunscreen protection and may help reduce the risk of skin cancer. Other studies suggest milk thistle acts synergistically with chemotherapy. 

Be sure to inform your doctor if you are taking milk thistle. Preliminary studies suggest there may be interactions between milk thistle and cancer prevention drugs including Raloxifene.
